"A friend is one who believes in you when you have ceased to believe in yourself". To my mind this proverb is the best definition of a true friend. Nowadays not everyone can be a friend, because it means a great responsibility but they exist. So, a real friend is someone who always supports you, doesn't laugh at you and always tells the truth, even if it is bad.
It depends on a person and situation. I know some people who want to hear only the truth because their actions depend on it. But of course there are situations in our life when we should tell a white lie (for example, if a person is ill and we want to cheer him up).
